How to turn on BitLocker on the Operating system drive

Follow the steps below to enable BitLocker Drive Encryption on your DMU laptop.  Ensure you save your recovery key and email it to the Help Desk (respond to the email from the Help Desk when possible).  


It is crucial to save the recovery key as it will unlock the drive if something were to go wrong.  If you lose the key and/or do not have a back up with the Help Desk all data will be lost.


Checklist:

  1. Encrypt Drive
  2. Email Recovery Key


Before you Begin:  Back up your files.  Either to an external device or Cloud storage account.  If you lose your recovery key and/or do not have a copy sent to the Help Desk and something goes wrong, you will lose access to all data on the drive.


Encrypt Drive:

  1. Click your START button and type "Bitlocker" (no quotes)
  2. Click Manage Bitlocker in the search results


     
  3. When the control panel opens:
     
  4. Click Turn On Bitlocker and follow the prompts
     


    You may be required to reboot before proceeding.  If so, follow the prompts.  When your computer has rebooted and you have logged back in, bitlocker will continue where it left off.
  5. Save the recovery key to an external device and Click Next


  6. Take default options for the 2 following screens
        Choose encryption mode to use
        Are you ready (You can bypass the bitlocker system check. )
     
  7. You can check the status of the encryption by clicking the icon in system tray


Email Recovery Key

  1. Email the recovery key you saved to the Help Desk.
  2. If possible, respond to the email from the Help Desk so it can go directly into your ticket. 

If you lose your recovery key and/or do not have a copy sent to the Help Desk and something goes wrong, you will lose access to all data on the drive.

Your key will be different than the one shown.
