Overview: Information Security Services
Our security team is focused on bringing you the tools and information needed to provide a safe and secure computing environment.
The services and tools that safeguard DMU’s computing resources and data include, but are not limited to, desktop configuration, mobile device management, antivirus, firewalls, and network monitoring.

Antivirus and Antispyware
DMU provides Microsoft Defender to protect DMU-issued Windows and Macintosh computers from viruses, adware/spyware, and other malicious software.
Encryption
Encrypting your laptop and desktop computers and mobile devices is the single most important step you can take to protect your personal information and DMU's data in the event that the device is lost or stolen. The University has established a requirement to encrypt all DMU-issued Windows and Mac computers. Encryption is also required in order to access DMU email from a mobile device. Encryption protects data from unauthorized disclosure by encoding it with a password. You should always encrypt sensitive data when there is the risk that it will be lost or stolen. ITS strongly recommends the use of encryption for other sensitive information.
Secure Mail
Secure Mail helps ensure encryption of highly sensitive information sent via email. Access to this service is provided to staff and faculty in departments who regularly deal with highly sensitive information.
Passwords
A good password is easy to remember but difficult to guess. It should be easy for you to remember without writing it down and difficult for both people who know you and anonymous password-crackers to guess. Remember, never share your password with anyone. ITS will never ask for your password.
2-Step Verification
In order to protect your account, all faculty, staff, and students are required to enroll in 2-step verfication. This process requires you to provide something you know (your password) and something you have (e.g., your mobile device with the authenticator app). For 2-Step verification, you can receive a code via text message, phone call, or the Microsoft Authenticator App. We recommend the Authenticator App as the most convenient and secure.
VPN
VPN, or Virtual Private Network, allows access to the DMU network while away from campus. In technical terms, it allows remote systems to obtain a campus IP address, for the purpose of access to certain restricted on-campus systems and network shares. When you are on VPN your access to campus systems is encrypted.
Employee Security Training
All employees are required to complete security awareness training.
