Respondus LockDown Browser D2L Dashboard
To set up a quiz in Brightspace that requires students to use LockDown Browser, please utilize the following steps. These steps must be repeated each semester as exams are copied forward. Using a standard web browser, log into Brightspace as an instructor. In the course, open the Quizzes tab and open the LockDown Browser Dashboard. Identify the list of exams available in this course: Establish Exam Settings: Select Modify Settings from the context menu to the left of the quiz title. Select the desired option. You may additionally require that LockDown Browser be used to view quiz feedback and results. NOTE: Optionally you may create a password that students must enter to start the quiz. LockDown Browser will prompt students to enter the instructor-provided password before proceeding with the quiz. Select Advanced Settings: The first setting will prevent students from exiting the browser until the exam is completed. This setting should be utilized unless you desire students to have the ability to exit an exam without submitting. Once this setting is established, you also have the option to add an exam specific password that students will need to exit the exam early. This allows exam proctors to providethe password in case of system or computer issues during an exam. The second setting will allow students to take the exam with an iPad, using the free LockDown Browser app. The third setting will allow specific students to access the exam with screen reader accessibility programs. See respondus.com/accessibility for an additional step that’s required by the student. The fourth and fifth settings allow instructors to provide students with a calculator or print function in the LockDown Browser toolbar. NOTE: For additional information, select the [explain] link that follows each setting. For information on Respondus Monitor please review the article Enable Respondus Monitor for an Exam. Click Save and Close to apply settings.

After the exam you can review video and statistics from the exams. Monitor uses AI to automatically flag events that may need to be reviewed. Class Results Navigate to the Respondus LockDown Dashboard Select the down arrow next to the exam select Class Results You can sort results by selecting one of the column titles. Click the plus button next to a student name to review their video. NOTE: The default sort is by Review Priority. Review priority is based on the number of flagged items by the AI. You can also mark the video as reviewed in the Reviewed column, this reviewed status has no impact on the student’s grade and is only there to help you note that you have reviewed a video. The entire video is available if you need to watch in its entirety. To the right of the video you can select specific flagged time frames to jump to them. Flags can be jumped to by clicking the time code. An explain button can be clicked to see why the AI flagged the item. Below the video you can view screenshots of the flagged times for quick review. Only use if you are not familiar with your students and need the extra step of verification. Environment Check (advised) - Students record a short video of their surroundings to confirm they do not have notes, electronic devices, or books in their immediate area. Facial Detection Check (advised) - Monitor uses AI to detect if a student’s face has left the frame or is looking away from the screen. It will automatically create flags for you to review. Facial Detection Options: Prevent students from starting the exam if face cannot be detected during Startup Sequence. (advised) - User cannot start the exam until they are in the frame of the video. Notify Students During the exam if face cannot be detected (prompt for a fix) (advised) - User will be notified if they bump the webcam and they are no longer in frame. Best Practices for Taking a Respondus Monitor Exam
Ensure you are on the most updated version of Respondus LockDown Browser (directions on how to update to the latest version of Respondus are available on D2L and our Pulse Covid-19 Student Resources Page). A hardwired Ethernet connection is the best option. Please note that most wireless routers allow you to connect via an ethernet cable, if your home does not provide wall ethernet connection points. If a hardwired Ethernet connection isn't possible, restart your modem/router and move as close to the router (Wi-Fi access point) as you can. Restart your computer and manually shut down all programs other than LockDown Browser. Shut down all other bandwidth intensive applications that might be running on the network, if possible. Examples would be cell phones, tablets, online gaming, Netflix, etc.
