Windows 10 - Selecting Audio Playback Device

Modified on: Fri, Jun 13 2025 1:56 PM

If you have multiple audio devices connected to your laptop or docking station you may need to select which one to use if audio is playing on the wrong device.

Follow these steps to select your audio playback device.

1. Find the Audio Icon on your task bar. It will be in the system tray near the clock.

2. Click the arrow to expand the menu.

3. Select your audio device from the list.

Additional Notes -

  • If "Targus Audio" is an option, let the Solutions Hub know and we can manually remove that option, as that is the Audio Jack on the physical dock itself.

  • You should always select the audio device that is either plugged in, Bluetooth connected or select the options for "Realtek(R) Audio" as these are the built-in speakers in the laptop itself.

  • A way to test if audio is coming through the speakers is to select the speaker icon in the bottom right and move your slider to the left and you will hear a "Ding", then slide it up and you will hear a louder "Ding"

  • If you do not hear any sound at all, double check your settings and make sure that the Realtek speakers or your personal listening device is selected.

  • If all else fails, please contact us at the Solutions Hub!
