Microsoft Collaboration Tools
Teams vs. OneDrive vs. SharePoint: Which One Do I Use?
All three tools store files, which is why they feel interchangeable. They aren't — each one has a job. This short video (2:08) explains how they fit together when you and your team get work done.
The short version
OneDrive
Your personal workspace. Drafts and works-in-progress, private until you share them.
Microsoft Teams
Where you work together. Chat, meetings, and real-time co-authoring with colleagues.
SharePoint
Where your department's files live and stay — shared, approved, long-term.
WHAT PEOPLE GET WRONG
-
Teams doesn't actually store your files. Files shared in a channel live in SharePoint; files shared in a private chat live in your OneDrive.
-
These three tools are how your team builds the work — not where your audience goes to get the finished version.
One document, start to finish
1
Draft it privately in OneDrive.
2
Co-author and review it with your team in Teams.
3
Store the approved version in SharePoint — one source of truth.
4
Publish it wherever your audience gets it (for course content, that's still D2L).
